The Outstanding Canadian Awards was formed by a group of community leaders, to select and honor outstanding leaders, successful professionals, and volunteers, from the Canadian communities and the visible minority groups, for their exemplary work and for their efforts in promoting diversity in Canada.  The foundation’s members of the board feel strongly that Canadians, who voluntarily involve themselves in community activities to promote the welfare of others, deserve to be recognized and acknowledged. It promotes its motto of "Canadians Honoring Canadians".
The first Outstanding Canadian Awards was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the year 2000.
The last in-person presentation of awards was held at Sheraton Parkway Hotel in 2017 to commemorate the 150 years of Canadian Confederation.
Awards were presented to community leaders virtually due to the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 era.
